![]() Movement is back to normal again, although each push is harsher, the result is more confidence and stability, and that turned into faster response, acceleration and speed. And last but not least, the tighter and solid support all around, especially sideways on the forefoot and on the heels. No more mattress under the feet and they are feeling every impact of the hard ground. Another thing that i noticed is that the comfy padding is gone. The immediate reaction is not the traction, but how close the feet are to the ground, and the BT Feathers aren’t even known for being low either. A pair of shoes that is designed for badminton. I slipped back into my trusted Adidas BT Feather. What I do notice is that despite the coarse tread on the sole, they perform well with traction, I didn’t have much problem with the grip on smooth indoor surfaces.Īfter maybe 10-15mins of hitting, I could no longer take it. Although it does make me concentrate harder with extra strength added to stabilize the feet, akin to say wearing sandals while playing badminton (you have done that too, right?), it is very unstable. What seemingly just a half court fore/aft movement also requires sideways pushing off! The lack of support, and especially with the mental awareness of it, drastically slowed down the initial movement. The drill progressed to some block and netshots, a bit more footwork involved. And while I didn’t risk pushing it too far but if pushed even harder, I am sure the foot will be met with a cliff falling off the side of the sole. Pushing sideways the feet just slides outwards for a little bit before catching some moderate soft resistance. And being floated so high it really did make me lose confidence on any sideways lateral movement.Īs expected what was very noticible is the lack of lateral support. I was surprised how much traction is required just adjusting the body position for simple drives and clears. The Brooks made me felt like I was walking on a thin mattress. Perhaps mentally I knew that they are not the right ones to wear, every step was taken with care. The drills was pretty simple, some clears and drives initially, I was surprised how conscious I was with the shoes. The shoes are like the regular style running shoes with ample amount of padding on the heel, and little lateral support, so what can go wrong. I was slightly on the sore side after the run but the promise was that I only have to feed while standing on one spot.Īnd since I still had my running shoes on, which was a pair of Brooks Glycerin 10, I just walked out to the court with that and a racket. One day after I came back from a hard effort on the road and the wife wants to do some drills. The competition around is only so-so and I usually do some practice with the boys and then i go out for a fast 5km run to train my stamina. There isn’t much that I can do during that 2 hours period. My wife and kids attends a badminton class every Sunday, first the kids have a 1 hour small group lesson and then the wifey takes a 1 hour 1-on-2 with a local coach. Due to the design of running shoes, there is a high chance of getting injured wearing them to play badminton. But have anyone of us ever tried doing that? I have done just that recently and here is what i found out.īefore going into the rest of this article, I want to make a disclaimer: Playing badminton with running shoes is highly not recommended. ![]() The seasoned badminton players all knows that it is a big no-no. NIOSH says external microphones such as the MicW i436 omni-directional measurement microphone comply with the sound meter standard. Newer iPhones allow users to connect external microphones through the headset jack when using these apps. No Windows phone noise apps met NIOSH’s standards either. Therefore, NIOSH could not recommend a particular app for the Android platform. Yep, that’s the catch: Because several manufacturers make Android phones, there was a wide variance among the same app measurements on difference devices. NIOSH says these four apps may be considered adequate for certain occupational noise assessments when used on iPhones. Out of these three, SoundMeter had the best results. The answer is, “Yes,” but only four apps that were tested measure up. Can smartphone apps, costing anywhere from $1 to $20, provide accurate occupational noise measurements? The most unique tool we’ll be checking out is a browser-based AI tool by Vance AI. There were also some issues with additional artifacts appearing in the image. We found the results to be more similar to Photoshop, reducing some of the noise but not all of it. Reduce Noise in DxO PhotoLabsĭxO PhotoLab 4 is a full-feature photo editor, much like Lightroom Classic.Īnd like Lightroom, it includes some relatively easy-to-use tools to reduce noise, grain, and other issues like chromatic aberration. The results were pretty impressive, but let’s take a look at a couple other programs before we decide on a winner. Not only does it offer some of the same settings we’ve seen in other program, but it also includes AI models based around particular lighting/photo issues.Īnd since this is a standalone program based entirely around noise removal, there are a ton of other options and settings to explore. Topaz DeNoise is another standalone software powered by AI technology. Here’s the results of our Luminar AI test after pushing all of the relevant settings to their max. ![]() Not only do they offer standalone programs, they also offer plug-ins for Lightroom Photoshop, allowing you to take advantage of their AI technology within your software of choice. The best part about Luminar is how flexible their tools are. We’ve explored Luminar and their AI tools in the past, so we’re somewhat familiar with what they can do and how easy they can be to use. Setting the Luminance slider to max yield a much smoother and softer image than Photoshop, but at the cost of some detail and definition from the original photo. Here you’ll see some options and sliders for Noise Reduction. Navigate to the Develop tab and scroll down to the Detail options. And, like Photoshop, it has some stock noise reduction tools available. Our other go-to editing software is Lightroom Classic. There are additional options, like being able to target noise by color channel.Īnd there are additional settings that will help try to recover any details that might have been lost with the noise reduction effect, but we found that, with this particular image, they just tended to reintroduce grain back into the image. Notice that, while some noise was removed, there’s still quite a bit remaining in the image. Within the Reduce Noise dialog, set the Strength of the effect to 10. This will help us see the results better, exaggerated as they may be. Throughout these tests we’re going to be dialing up the noise reduction settings of each program to max. Hover over the Noise option and select Reduce Noise. You can find the noise options under the Filter menu. This will convert all Filters to Smart Filters, which allows them to be disabled, removed, or adjusted at any time. ![]() Since the noise reduction option in Photoshop comes as a filter, it’s a good idea to first right-click on the image layer and select Convert to Smart Object. ![]() Photoshop is our home base when it comes to photo editing, so there’s no better place to start. We’ll be looking for the program that can remove the most noise while sacrificing as little of the original definition and detail in the photo as possible. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular programs out there, from our usual suspects like Photoshop and Lightroom Classic, to newer tools like Luminar AI, DxO PhotoLab, Topaz DeNoise, and Vance AI. With more devices out there capturing noisier photos, it’s no surprise then that noise reduction editing technology is on the rise. It’s even more common with portable digital cameras, like those found in mobile phones, since those devices have a limited dynamic range and a limited range of options for shutter speed and aperture settings. Noise often appears in images that are underexposed or were captured at a high ISO to compensate for environmental lighting conditions. ![]() The second wave is virtually synonymous with “midwestern emo” and begins with the first and only Cap’n Jazz album (see a trend with these canonical bands?). While such bands as Jawbox, Drive Like Jehu, and Jawbreaker weren’t often called “emo” at the time, and they likely rejected the term wholeheartedly, it’s impossible to imagine the trajectory of the genre without their contributions. The first wave starts in Washington, D.C., from 1983 to 1987 or so, and it slowly starts to trickle out toward other pockets of influence, places where it might have been considered post-hardcore, straight-up punk or just plain ol’ “indie rock” - like San Diego, the Pacific Northwest, the Bay Area, and, of course, D.C. We found it helpful to use the “waves” as an organizing principle, though there’s still plenty of overlap and imperfect boundaries. ![]() ![]() Yet they all emerged from the lineage of DIY shows in youth-group scenes, churches, suburban basements, and VFW halls: Chris Carrabba was a fill-in on guitar for New Found Glory and fronted Floridian melodramatists Further Seems Forever before focusing on Dashboard Confessional Jimmy Eat World was making splits with Jebediah and Christie Front Drive even after they were on a major label and Pete Wentz came up in suburban Chicago’s hardcore scene, playing in bands with names like Arma Angelus and Racetraitor. No one would confuse Dashboard Confessional or Jimmy Eat World or Fall Out Boy with Dag Nasty or really any other hardcore band. Go to your average Emo Night and you might wonder why Linkin Park or Evanescence are missing.Īs we set out to define the parameters for this list, one guiding principle we agreed upon was to go back to the original definition whenever in doubt. Spend any time in the trenches where the battle for “real emo” is fought and you’ll be convinced that Rites of Spring and maybe Cap’n Jazz are the only bands that belong on this list. But unlike with grunge or goth or any other subgenre that evolved from a defined set of sonic characteristics to a fashion phenomenon, the definition of “emo music” is either too narrow or too vague to the point of being almost completely useless. On the one hand, the genre has long been denied serious critical assessment, often dismissed as music for teens but never subject to the generous leeway or empathy given to pop music specifically designed for adolescents. Anyone or anything can be emo, and yet almost nobody claims making it.Īll of which makes the creation of a “100 Greatest Emo Songs” list feel both necessary and nigh impossible to do correctly. What could better appeal to teenagers than a genre accused of being overly serious and painfully self-aware at the same time? Minor Threat’s Ian MacKaye, who eventually became best known for his work in Fugazi, was viewed as an ethical barometer when he claimed emo was “the stupidest fucking thing I’ve heard in my life,” and since then, the line has been repeated by just about every emo band to warrant the distinction. It’s now a fixed concept within popular culture and a resilient mode of expression. Drake is emo, Game of Thrones is emo, the Beach Boys and Shakespeare are emo, Kraft Macaroni & Cheese is emo. In the past 35 years, the meaning of emo has become almost completely inverted - it’s more likely to mean “hard-core emotional” in the public discourse, extending beyond punk or even music itself as shorthand for anything defined by a kind of hyperbolic and demonstrative sadness. Among them were Rites of Spring and Embrace, which each released one self-titled album before breaking up, setting both the sonic and career template for emo bands going forward (and, judging by the above statements, also the prevailing attitude bands should have toward the term “emo” itself). What they had in common: a greater emphasis on melody, dynamics, and, yes, lyrics about feelings. punk during the so-called Revolution Summer. The first known usage of emo dates back to the mid-1980s, when “emo-core” served as shorthand for “emotional hardcore,” a label applied to a wave of bands that deviated from the macho aggression of D.C. Let’s just blame it all on Washington, D.C. “The stupidest fucking thing I’ve heard in my entire life.” Musician-activist Jenni Toomey, speaking on behalf of perhaps the first emo band in Andy Greenwald’s Nothing Feels Good “Rites of Spring existed well before the term did, and they hated it.” ![]() Photo-Illustration: Vulture and photos by Getty Images and Shutterstock |
